UBC Group welcome Rocket Range reprieve
The chief executive of the UBC Group, James Pedrana, has described the news that the rocket range on his native island of South Uist is not closing as "sensational" and a "credit to all those who diligently campaigned to retain the missile range."
Scottish Secretary, Jim Murphy MP travelled to Uist last week to inform workers that the range is not going to close, and that it is being retained because of its strategic importance to the United Kingdom, as a major defence asset.
Mr Pedrana said: "this will be a great relief to all the staff and their families in Uist. What the Secretary of state announced today is great news and it will allow families and the wider community to plan for the future with certainty. The UBC Group is one of many companies to have benefited from a military presence on our islands. We're pleased to have an excellent working relationship with the range operator QinetiQ, and we actually have staff on St Kilda just now."
